Att göra – Methana
When you’re looking to escape the holiday hustle and bustle, Methana is a volcanic wilderness where you can swap cocktails for epic trails. Its tiny fishing villages give way to mountainous lava domes, craters and coastal cliffs, making it ideal for adventurous visitors to hike or bike their way around. It’s all about getting back to nature in this corner of the Peloponnese, where 32 volcanic craters litter the 20-square-mile peninsula. You’ll find natural thermal pools, earthy pine forests, and views of the Aegean Sea from every peak. Top three things to do in Methana1. Hike to the Methana VolcanoThis peninsula is dotted with rugged hills and volcanic peaks, making it a hiker’s haven. Warm up with a stroll through the port of Methana before taking it up a notch and trekking along mountain trails to the Methana Volcano. Spend a few hours taking in historic churches and peaceful sea views along the way. Top tip – bring an old-school paper map, as GPS doesn’t reach every crater. 2. Hire an e-bike to tour MethanaIf you’re keen to explore a little further – and break less of a sweat – then an e-bike is a great way to see Methana. Many of the trails are bike-friendly, and with some pretty steep slopes, you’ll be pleased you opted for the boost of the electric motor. There are routes ranging from 20km to 45km that take in combos of volcanic and coastal landscapes – all with epic views.3. Explore the Cave of PeristeriThe Cave of Peristeri is an ancient natural rock formation, dating back around two and a half million years. If you fancy a look at its underground lakes and pointy stalagmites, then you’re best taking a guide unless you’re an experienced caver. There are three chambers to explore, with two only reached by a small boat or by swimming. Indiana Jones wannabes will love this adventure.
