Akropolis i Aten är en unik plats i världen, en av de få där mänsklighetens historia verkar återuppliva och berikar nuet med sin forntida doft. Att besöka Akropolis, symbol för Aten, kommer överraska dig med sin klassiska skönhet.
Byggd på en sten som stiger till 156 meter över havet, var Akropolis (från den grekiska "högstaden") det religiösa hjärtat i den grekiska huvudstaden. Egentligen har dess historia ännu djupare rötter: det steniga landskapet var platsen för befästningar och prinsens hemvist i den mykeniska tidsåldern. Under första hälften av 600-talet f.Kr. upphörde den att vara en fästning och blev en plats för tillbedjan och höll templet tillägnad de lokala gudarna.
År 480 f.Kr. ockuperades Akropolis av perserna. Under Perikles ålder, på 500-talet f.Kr., för att fira segern över perserna, tog athenerna på sig rekonstruktionen, som födde Parthenon, ett peripteralt doriskt tempel med joniska arkitektoniska detaljer, ett magnifikt emblem för Akropolis. En hyllning till gudinnan som hade skyddat staden under perserkriget och symbol för Atenens makt. Parthenon inrymde den kolossala statyn av Athena Parthenos. Nu var skulpturen förlorad, designad av Phidias, 11 meter hög och täckt med elfenben och guld.
Rekonstruktionen av Akropolis slutfördes med Propylaea, som fungerade som en monumental ingång till övre staden, Athena Nikes tempel och det joniska templet i Erechtheion, med sin berömda Karyatiderna, med draperade kvinnliga figurer (karyatider) som stödjande kolonner.
