Ting å gjøre i Herculaneum
Herculaneum er en by som ser over Napoli-gulfen, og den romerske byen er viden kjent for sine arkeologiske utgravinger.
Det går frasagn om at byen ble grunnlagt rundt år 600 f.Kr. av Hercules, og at den så smått ble et viktig handelssentrum på grunn av sin formidable plassering nær gulfen. Innbyggerne i byen tilba Hercules, som også skal ha grunnlagt Vesuv-fjellet.
I år 79 e.Kr. hadde Vesuv et utbrudd som jevnet byen med et 18 m høyt lag av vulkansk aske og søle. Det var ikke før tidlig 1700-tall at byen ble oppdaget av en brønngraver. Opprinnelig ble det antatt at Hercules og innbyggerne hadde rømt fra byen i forkant av katastrofen, men omkring 300 skjeletter er blitt funnet under utgravingene.
Veien til de arkeologiske utgravingene opp Torre del Greco kalles for Den gyldne mil på grunn av de storslåtte villaene som ble bygget der på 1700-tallet.
Turister fra hele verden strømmer til ruinene av Herculaneum samt nabobyen Pompeii som også ble askelagt av Vesuv. Når du går inn i ruinene får du se Herculaneums vakre boliger og fargerike mosaikker, veggmalerier og marmorpanel.
Utgravingene er blitt inkludert på UNESCOs verdensarvliste.
