Beskrivning

Cypern är hem för några enormt viktiga antika grekiska och romerska platser. På denna utflykt besöker du Afrodites klippa, antika Pafos och kungagravarna, Kourion - och njuter av ledig tid i Pafos hamnområde. Andreas, en av våra kunniga lokalguider, säger följande: "Kungarnas gravar ger oss en värdefull inblick i den antika Medelhavskulturen. Det finns mycket liknande gravar i Alexandria, vilket visar de starka banden mellan de två städerna i antiken.'

Efter ett kaffestopp längs vägen kommer du att stanna till vid Kourions arkeologiska plats för att se landmärken som teatern – med anor från 200-talet f.Kr. – och Agora. På vägen till Paphos gör vi ett fotostopp vid Petra tou Romiou – eller Afrodites klippa – där, enligt legenden, den antika grekiska kärlekens och skönhetens gudinna dök upp ur havsskummet. Andreas säger: 'På Kourion ser du Eustolios ruinhus och får reda på hur livet var här innan staden förstördes av en jordbävning på 300-talet.'

Därefter åker vi till det antika Paphos för ett guidat besök av kungarnas gravar, Dionysos hus och dess välbevarade mosaiker. Andreas säger: 'Kungarnas klippgravar var egentligen inte avsedda för kungligheter, utan istället lades aristokratin och öguvernörerna till vila här. Namnet återspeglar begravningsplatsens stora storhet.' Senare kommer du att njuta av lite ledig tid i Pafos hamn. Kanske kan du promenera längs vattnet eller ta något att äta på en mysig uteservering

Eva, one of our local guides, says of this excursion, ‘You'll wander through layers of history, culture and mythology.'You'll dive straight into the past at Kourion, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Cyprus. Visit the Roman baths and amble into the site's centrepiece, the Greco-Roman theatre. Concerts are still held to this day. While the mosaics of the trio of excavated houses known as those of Eustolius, the Gladiators and Achilles are as impressive as when they were laid down. The 15th-century Kolossi Castle is up next. This steeped-in-legend Crusader-built fortress is nowadays surrounded by blooming plants. Then, we'll head for a local lunch in a family-run taverna before visiting mountain-fringed Omodos where you'll wander around skinny cobbled streets lined with Byzantine buildings. It's Eva's favourite village. She says, ‘The charm of the stone houses, the tranquillity and peace. It's as if it has sprung from a fairytale. I love dropping into one of the cafés and seeing locals have philosophical discussions, political arguments and a bit of gossip.' To finish, there's a wine tasting session, where you'll learn all about sweet commandaria wine – one of the oldest varieties in the world.

On this tour, you'll take in Aphrodite's Rock, ancient Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings, visit Kourion – and enjoy free time in the Paphos harbour area. Andreas, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The Tombs of the Kings offer us a valuable insight into ancient Mediterranean culture. There are very similar tombs in Alexandria, demonstrating the strong ties between the two cities in ancient times.'After a coffee pit-stop along the way, you'll stop by Kourion archaeological site to see landmarks such as the theatre – dating from the 2nd century BC – and the Agora. En route to Paphos, there's a photo stop at Petra tou Romiou – or Aphrodite's Rock – where, legend has it, the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty emerged from the sea foam. Andreas says, ‘At Kourion, you see the ruined house of Eustolios and find out what life was like here before the city was destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century.'Next, we'll head to ancient Paphos for a guided visit of the Tombs of the Kings, the House of Dionysos and its well-preserved mosaics. Andreas says, ‘The rock-hewn Tombs of the Kings were not actually intended for royalty, but instead the aristocracy and island governors were laid to rest here. The name reflects the sheer grandeur of the necropolis.' Later, you'll enjoy some free time to shop and wander around Paphos Harbour. Maybe you can stroll along the waterfront or grab a bite to eat at one of the many terrace cafés.
