Muinainen roomalainen kaupunki Pompeji ei esittelyjä kaipaa. Vulkaanisen hohkakivi- ja tuhkakerroksen alle hautautunut kaupunki on ollut UNESCOn perintöluettelossa vuodesta 1997. Ennen kuin kaikkivaltias Vesuvius purkautui räjähdysmäisesti vuonna 79, Pompeji oli vauras kauppapaikka, jossa asui yli 10 000 asukasta. Kaupunki oli tiheä asuinrakennusten, kauppojen ja viihdekeskusten verkosto, jossa oli myös amfiteatteri, useita termaalikylpylöitä sekä bordelli. Domenico Fontana löysi kadonneen kaupungin vahingossa vuonna 1594 kaivaessaan tunnelia, mutta viralliset kaivaukset alkoivat vasta vuonna 1748. Nestemäistä kipsiä käytettiin orgaanisen materiaalin (mukaan lukien ihmiskehot) luomisessa, täyttämällä tuhkaontelot kipsillä.
