Ikoninen vapauden symboli, uusklassinen vapauden jumalatar pidellen soihtua kohotetussa kädessä. Ranskalaisten lahja Amerikalle toimitettiin 300:na kuparikappaleena, jotka koottiin Gustave Eiffelin suunnitelman mukaisesti. Historian ja ainutlaatuisen rakenteensa lisäksi, patsaalla kannattaa vierailla myös henkeäsalpaavien kaupunki- ja satamanäkymien vuoksi.
Idean takana oli ranskalainen Édouard René de Laboulaye, joka näki monumentin maiden ystävyyssuhteen, sekä demokratian voiton merkkinä. Jälkimmäistä on vaikea olla huomaamatta ylpeästä roomalaisesta vapauden jumalattaresta, voittoisasta soihdusta, lakitaulusta, jossa lukee Yhdysvaltain itsenäisyysjulistuksen päivämäärä, sekä tallotuista rikkoutuneista kahleista. Patsas, joka on varsinaiselta nimeltään ”Vapaus valaisee maailmaa” (Liberty Enlightening the World), toivotti myös miljoonat siirtolaiset tervetulleeksi maahan.
Varaa lippusi hyvissä ajoin ennakkoon, erityisesti jos haluat varmistaa näkymäsi kruunulta (tätä korkeammalle ei ole mahdollista nousta, sillä soihdulle kiipeäminen kiellettiin vuonna 1916). Muistathan, että huipulle on 146 askelmaa, eikä kapuaminen sovellu kaikille. Vierailuun kannattaa sisällyttää myös käynti läheisellä Ellis Islandilla.
