Akropolis, Ateenan symboli, on ainutlaatuinen paikka maailmassa, yksi niistä harvoista, jossa ihmiskunnan historia tuntuu heräävän henkiin.
156 metriä merenpinnan yläpuolelle kohoavalle kalliolle rakennettu akropolis (kreikaksi "korkea kaupunki") oli Kreikan pääkaupungin uskonnollinen sydän. Itse asiassa sen historialla on vieläkin syvemmät juuret: kallio oli mykeneläisellä kaudella ruhtinaiden asuinpaikka ja linnoitusalue. 500-luvulla eaa. siitä tuli uskonnollinen paikka, jossa sijaitsi paikallisille jumalille omistettu temppeli.
Vuonna 480 eaa. persialaiset valtasivat akropoliin. Periklesin aikana, 400-luvulla eaa., juhlistaakseen voittoa persialaisista, ateenalaiset ryhtyivät jälleenrakennustöihin. Tuloksena syntyi Parthenon, kahdeksankulmainen doorilainen temppeli, jossa on joonialaisia piirteitä, ja joka on akropoliin upea symboli. Parthenon oli kunnianosoitus jumalattarelle, joka oli suojellut kaupunkia persialaissodan aikana. Siellä sijaitsi Phidiaksen suunnittelema, 11 metriä korkea Athena Parthenoksen patsas, joka oli päällystetty norsunluulla ja kullalla.
Akropoliin jälleenrakentamista täydennettiin propylaialla eli sisäänkäynnillä, Athene Niken temppelillä ja Erechtheionin joonialaisella temppelillä, jossa on kuuluisa Neitojen kuisti, jonka tukipylväinä on naishahmoja.
